Night in Sturgeon Bay carries its own kind of silence. The harbor is calm enough to hold a perfect reflection, the water so still that it seems unsure which side is real. The familiar shapes of Sturgeon Bay’s working waterfront stand under a clear winter sky with the granary, the museum tower, and the tugs that have spent countless nights in these waters. The photo is titled Stuck in Time, and that is exactly how it feels.

The tugboats Donald J. Sarter, Jimmy L., Cameron B., and Jacquelyn Yvonne rest quietly in the slip, their reflections doubling the lights of the docks. Together they tell the story of a harbor that has never stopped working. Long after most towns have gone to sleep, the waterfront hums with the low rhythm of engines and the echo of steel against hull. This is the sound of Sturgeon Bay’s heart, steady and patient, shaped by generations of shipbuilders, welders, and captains who have called this place home.

The granary stands nearby, weathered and proud, a landmark that has watched the rhythm of work change with the seasons. Its windows catch the glow from the streetlights, and the rising steam from the shipyard drifts upward, folding into the night sky. There is no movement in the water, only the illusion of it, as if the harbor itself has been frozen mid-thought.

Photographs like this are less about the moment than the feeling of it. The kind of night when the air feels heavy with memory, when you can almost hear the stories that live in the walls of the granary and the decks of the tugs. Sturgeon Bay’s working waterfront never really stops. It waits, breathes, and continues its quiet work beneath the stars. Stuck in Time captures that pause between motion and memory, where the present feels endless and the past is still within reach.
