After an evening of teaching photo classes, I did what anyone in Door County might do when the light still lingers on the water — I took the runabout for a short ride. The air was warm, the bay was calm, and by the time I turned back from Little Sturgeon, the full Buck Moon was rising over Sherwood Point. I had no plan to take a photo that night. It was one of those evenings meant for motion and quiet, not work.
As I drifted past the lighthouse, I cut the motor and floated. The reflection of the moon stretched across the water until it met the beam from Sherwood Point Light, and for one brief moment they fell perfectly in line. A shift of only six inches changed everything, breaking the connection and then bringing it back again. That was the shot. I didn’t chase it — it found me.
Sherwood Point Lighthouse has stood here since 1883, its red brick tower marking the entrance to Sturgeon Bay’s ship canal. Once home to generations of keepers, it is now automated but still an active aid to navigation. While the grounds remain closed to the public, visitors can view it easily from the water or take part in Door Peninsula Lighthouse Passport Days for a rare chance to step closer to its history.
That night, though, it belonged to the moon. The lighthouse, the cliffs, and the still water all seemed to hold their breath. I stayed there longer than I meant to, not because of the photograph, but because of what it felt like — the quiet, the balance, and that single moment when the world lined up just right.
