The path before you is more than just dirt winding through a hillside—it’s an invitation. Edged by tall grasses and bursts of wildflowers, the trail carves a delicate line through the lush green of Potawatomi State Park’s former ski hill. The view stretches far beyond the immediate slope, opening up to an expanse of dense forest, sunlit meadows, and, in the farthest reaches, the soft shimmer of Sturgeon Bay. The sky, painted in the final hues of sunset, casts a golden glow over the horizon, a fleeting moment of warmth before twilight settles in. If you let your eyes drift past the treetops, you might just catch the faint outline of Snake Island, barely visible in the distance, a whisper of land against the bay.

This is Potawatomi State Park, where every curve of the land holds a story. Once home to winter’s rush of skiers carving down these slopes, the hill now offers a different kind of exhilaration—the quiet kind, the kind found in stillness and vastness. The park itself, named after the Potawatomi people who first inhabited the area, has been a place of gathering for generations, whether for hunting, fishing, or simply finding peace in nature’s embrace. Established in 1928 as Door County’s first state park, it has protected these landscapes for nearly a century, preserving not just its forests and limestone bluffs but the spirit of the land itself.

At the heart of this place is the Ice Age Trail, a 1,200-mile National Scenic Trail that begins its journey here, tracing the path of ancient glaciers that once shaped Wisconsin. From this very spot, where the land tumbles down toward the bay, hikers set off on an adventure that spans the state, following the remnants of an ice age that ended thousands of years ago. While the ski hill no longer echoes with the sound of downhill racers, its legacy endures in every footstep on these trails, every sunset that lights up the valley, and every quiet moment spent gazing out over the vast, untamed beauty of Door County.
