A winding path, framed by towering trees and dappled in shifting green light, ascends gently through Potawatomi State Park. The wooden steps, worn by time and countless footsteps, seem to pull hikers forward, inviting them deeper into the heart of the forest. This section of the Ice Age Trail is more than just a route—it is a connection to an ancient world, shaped by glaciers that once covered this land in ice.

The Ice Age Trail itself is a 1,200-mile-long journey through Wisconsin’s glacial past, following the very edge of where ice sheets once carved through the landscape. Stretching from Potawatomi State Park in Sturgeon Bay to Interstate State Park on the western border, the trail winds through towns like Wausau, Madison, and Janesville, passing rolling moraines, pristine lakes, and rugged ridges left behind by retreating ice. Every step along its path is a step through history—an experience of walking where mammoths once roamed and where the earth was reshaped by time itself.

Potawatomi State Park marks the eastern terminus of this grand trail, where the waters of Sturgeon Bay mirror the vastness of the sky and where hikers begin—or conclude—an incredible journey. The park itself, rich in history and natural beauty, has long been a destination for those seeking solitude, adventure, and the quiet wisdom of the forest. The trail here, ascending through the woods, is a perfect representation of the Ice Age Trail’s spirit: a passage through time, a challenge to the body, and a gift to the soul.
