Heartbeat

Not every photograph begins with a plan.

We were driving through Fish Creek near sunset when the harbor caught my eye. It was one of those moments where you immediately know you need to stop. I pulled over, grabbed my camera, and walked to the shoreline while the bay remained perfectly calm.

As I looked across the anchored sailboats, it wasn't the boats themselves that drew me in. It was the repeating pattern created by the masts and their reflections. Looking at the back of the camera, my wife remarked that it looked like a heartbeat on a monitor. The title stuck.

The scene lasted only a few minutes before a light breeze disturbed the water and the reflections disappeared. Had we driven by just a little later, this photograph would never have existed.

Some of my favorite images are the ones I never set out to make. They're the reward for paying attention and being willing to stop when something unexpected catches your eye.
