Eagle Light

Eagle Bluff Light has watched over the waters of Peninsula State Park since 1868, its beam sweeping the Strawberry Channel through every storm and season. By daylight it feels inviting, a relic of another age. But when night settles in and the park empties, the place grows strangely alive. The wind carries voices from the trees, the creak of the lantern room sounds almost like a door opening, and you begin to understand why people say the lighthouse is never truly empty.

Keeper Henry Stanley once lived here with his wife and children, tending the flame long before electricity. The work was constant, the nights endless, and the isolation could fray even the steadiest nerves. Records tell of a fever that swept through the family one winter, and of long stretches when Stanley was the only one left to keep the light burning. Some say he never really stopped.

Volunteers who lock up the museum after dark tell stories. They hear footsteps pacing the floorboards upstairs when no one else is there. Others have seen a faint glow flicker in the tower on nights when the lantern is dark, as if someone is still climbing the stairs with an oil can in hand.

Maybe it’s imagination. Or maybe the keeper simply refuses to leave his post. The beacon still shines across the bay, reaching past the trees and into the water, steady and unwavering. Those who linger long enough sometimes swear they hear the turn of a key, the sigh of an unseen breath, and the soft rhythm of boots echoing through the tower once more.
