The forest floor at Whitefish Dunes State Park has a rhythm all its own. Shafts of light filter through sugar maples and beeches, scattering across moss, sand, and fallen leaves in a soft dance of color. In late summer and early fall, when the air grows damp and the days shorten, the forest becomes a kingdom of mushrooms. Bright orange fly agarics, coral-shaped ramarias, and clusters of oyster mushrooms cling to rotting logs and the bases of trees, quietly recycling the forest itself.

Whitefish Dunes is known for its dramatic shoreline, but inland it holds a quieter story. Beneath the cedar and pine, mycelium webs stretch unseen for miles, connecting trees and trading nutrients in a kind of hidden economy. Every autumn this network comes alive, sending up fruiting bodies in endless shapes and hues—delicate parasols, puffballs the size of fists, and the faint scent of earth and decay that signals renewal.

Visitors often come to walk the dunes or reach Clark Lake, but those who wander the wooded trails discover another world entirely. The shifting canopy filters light like stained glass, and for a few fleeting weeks, the ground glows with color as life recycles itself in silence. In that moment, surrounded by stillness and decay and rebirth, it is impossible not to feel the forest breathing back.
