As the sun sinks toward the horizon, the sky over Horseshoe Bay is awash in soft pastel hues—rosy pinks and gentle purples blending effortlessly into the calm waters below. The colors seem almost weightless, like a delicate brushstroke across the vast canvas of the bay. This tranquil moment, captured at Murphy Park in Egg Harbor, is a testament to the quiet beauty that has drawn visitors to this shoreline for generations.
Horseshoe Bay has long been a place of both natural beauty and human significance. The bay’s name itself is derived from its distinct curved shape, cradled by the shoreline like a protective embrace. During Door County’s early years, this area was an important hub for the region’s booming lumber and shipping industries. Logs cut from the county’s dense forests were transported to mills along the bay, where they were processed and sent out across the Great Lakes. In later years, the region transitioned from industry to recreation, as families began flocking to its scenic shores in search of relaxation and escape from the city.
Murphy Park, where this photo was taken, is one of Door County’s treasured public spaces. Donated by the Murphy family in the 1930s, the park was established to provide a place for locals and visitors alike to enjoy the natural splendor of the bay. Its sandy beach, shaded picnic areas, and picturesque views make it a favorite for those looking to experience the quiet side of Door County. The park’s pier extends into the bay, a perfect vantage point for watching sailboats glide across the horizon or for taking in a sunset as stunning as this one.
The waters of Horseshoe Bay, so peaceful at dusk, have long played a role in the maritime history of Door County. Schooners and steamers once traversed these waters, delivering goods and passengers to and from the peninsula. Today, the bay is a haven for boaters, kayakers, and those simply seeking a moment of serenity by the shore.
As the last light of day fades and the sky deepens into twilight, the scene at Murphy Park is one of timeless beauty. The soft cotton candy colors may last only moments, but the feeling of peace and wonder they inspire lingers long after the sun has disappeared beyond the horizon.
