You cross it on the way somewhere, walk beneath its steel framework, or wait while it opens for a passing boat. But spend some time along the water at sunset and you get a different look at a structure you might have passed a thousand times.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eHere, the bridge stretches across the bay beneath a clear blue sky, with the last warm color settling along the horizon. The long exposure smooths the moving water and draws the reflections into soft vertical lines beneath the steel. In the foreground, shoreline rocks remain visible through the shallows before the water deepens into blue. I like the detail in those rocks against the smoother water, and the way the bridge carries your eye toward the opposite shore.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eKnown locally as the Steel Bridge, the Michigan Street Bridge opened on July 4, 1931. Its dedication also made it a Door County veterans memorial, giving this everyday crossing a significance that’s easy to overlook when you’re focused on getting across town. Generations of residents and visitors have traveled over it since then, each with somewhere to be and probably very different ideas about how long a bridge opening should take.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThere’s some interesting engineering inside that familiar outline. The bridge has a double-leaf rolling-lift bascule span. In plain terms, the two movable sections roll back as they rise, using counterweights to balance the roadway and clear a passage for vessels. The Sturgeon Bay Historical Society identifies it as Wisconsin’s only remaining overhead-truss bridge of this particular type. Its place on the National Register of Historic Places, added in 2008, recognizes the importance of that design.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThat combination of road traffic above and boat traffic below is part of what makes Sturgeon Bay feel like Sturgeon Bay. The waterfront is still a working place, and the bridge has a job to do. Its framework was built to handle the crossing and the winds sweeping across the bay. Those practical choices also gave the city one of its most recognizable views.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eA long exposure lets me spend a little more time with that view. The water keeps moving while the shutter is open, softening the reflections around the piers. The bridge stays sharp, every beam and brace holding its place above the bay. You can see the structure clearly without losing the light and color of the evening around it.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eFor anyone who knows this crossing, there’s something satisfying about seeing it from the shoreline. You have time to follow the steelwork, notice the bridge tender’s house, and watch the light change on the water.
